Q. Determine graphically the coordinates of the vertices of triangle, the equations of whose sides are given by 

2y – x = 8

5y – x = 14 and 

y –2x = 1

Sol.  

We have 

2y – x = 8         ........(1)

5y – x = 14       ........(2)

y –2x = 1           ........(3)

From equation (1)

2y – x = 8

–x = 8 –2y

x = 2y –8

From equation (2)

5y – x = 14 

 – x = 14 –5y

x = 5y –14 

From equation (3)

y –2x = 1 

y = 1 + 2x

Plotting the above points and drawing lines joining them, we get the graphical representation:

Hence, the coordinates of the vertices of a triangle ABC are A(1, 3), B(2, 5) and C(–4, 2).
